Caps Back To Their Winning Ways

Edmonton, AB – It may not have been a record-breaking victory, but the Edmonton Capitals got back in the win column on Saturday with a 6-4 decision over the Yuma Scorpions.

One night earlier, Yuma crushed the Caps' hopes of setting a new Golden Baseball League record for consecutive wins by ending their 13-game streak. But Edmonton quickly got revenge on the Scorpions with the two-run victory, which was the first official game of the second half for the home side.

"We would have liked to keep the streak going and break the record, but the more important thing is us getting to the playoffs," said left fielder Larry Bigbie, who hit a home run for the Caps and also drove in the eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly. "The streak was great while it lasted, but we knew we couldn't win the rest of the season out. We have bigger things on our mind, and a win to start the second half is exactly what we wanted."

It was an explosive opening inning for both teams, as the Scorpions got to Caps starting pitcher Chris Little for three runs, but short stop Enrique Cruz and Bigbie hit back-to-back home runs in Edmonton's half to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Caps tied it up momentarily in the second as centre fielder Ryan Stevenson drove in third baseman Alex Prieto, but the Scorpions added one of their own in the third to maintain their one-run lead at 4-3. The home side drove in another equalizer in the fifth, with Cruz picking up his second RBI, to make it 4-4.

The Caps slowly pulled away from the Scorpions in the late innings, as Bigbie's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the seventh brought home catcher Nick Valdez, and Prieto's triple brought around pinch runner Alex Chavez in the eighth, giving them the 6-4 edge.

Edmonton got a solid night of pitching from three hurlers, as Little scattered eight hits and four runs over seven innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-1. Yosandy Ibanez blanked the Scorpions in the eighth and closer Chad Blackwell struck out two batters in a three-up-three-down ninth for his league-leading 11th save.

The Caps wrap up their homestand versus the Scorpions with their first Sunday afternoon game of the season tomorrow, starting at 2 p.m., as they'll try to win their third game of the four-game set. The Tijuana Cimarrones then head back to Edmonton for a three-game series, running Monday through Wednesday.

The first Sunday afternoon game of the season is a busy one, as Santa is coming to town along with his reindeer to celebrate Sobeys Christmas In July. Also, fans should make sure they bring donations for Edmonton's Food Bank. And after the game, they can stick around and get autographs from their favourite Caps players for the first Edmonton Sun Autograph Sunday of the year.
